Welcome to the Nolan Wine Company. Our vineyard is situated in the Wrattonbully wine region of South Australia, where the Nolan family has lived for over one hundred years.
In 1995 Philip and Anne Nolan started planting the vineyard, with chardonnay the first to go in.
This was followed by cabernet sauvignon in 1996 and a more recent planting of
shiraz . Our vineyard trades under the name Hynam Estate Vineyard, and is near the small township of Hynam in the Wrattonbully region.
Chardonnay
The chardonnay is planted with the rows running east/west for maximum protection from the sun.
By shading the fruit, fresh lime and lemon characters can be retained along with a higher acidity, this contributing to a fresh, crisp wine.
The vines are on a two wire vertical trellis which allows for the fruit to be well spread over the vine.
Cabernet Sauvignon
The cabernet rows run north/south to allow a good amount of sunlight to reach the fruit to allow the fruit to ripen well in this cool climate.
All of our vineyard is hand pruned, the cabernet in particular is pruned back hard to low bud numbers so that each vine only has a few bunches to ripen.
Shiraz
The most recent planting is
shiraz planted in 2005. Rows run north/south, with vertical shoot positioning to gain good sunlight into the bunch zone.
